Through the Iron River Watershed Project, there have been a number of activities implemented that target problems specific to the Iron River. These projects have been funded by a Clean Michigan Initiative grant through the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. Each project embarked upon was chosen because it has a direct and immediate positive impact to the water quality and habitat within the watershed. From working with local farmers to prevent their cattle from harming the streams, to partnering with the city of Iron River to improve storm water runoff, the Iron River Watershed Project has been an active and effective force in improving the condition of the Iron River.
Since 2001, there have been a number of projects implemented to reduce pollution, repair damaged or unstable sites along the river, and improve habitat.
